Use a hopper of an old combine like a mf super
92. Already has an auger on it. Just mount an hydraulic motor to drive it. You could mount it on a flat bed truck or carry it on a front end loader. Hope that helps, lots of these rigs around my area.

 

That is a good idea. Never thought of that one before. In my area, there are not a lot of small combines at all. I might be able to find one up north.

 

Are we talking about a truck mounted cake feeder?

80% of the farm trucks around here have these. might look into one. Not sure where your from, but most of the ones I've seen are made in KS, OK, & TX.

 

This is for a hog operation, and would preferably be a bigger tank, and have an auger instead of a chute. An auger with a flexible spout would be used.

 

If you can, get one of the old Case pull type combines, I'm talking about the smaller early models which most had an air cooled engine over top of the feeder house. They have a better hopper for chop and rolled grain, real easy to remove and the auger is more straight out so you get more reach outside the width of the tractor or whatever you're pulling it with, as opposed to more vertical with a long spout on a Massey or Cockshutt of the day.

I can't find a decent pick doing a quick search, but this is what they look like from the right hand side. This one is missing the unloading auger for some reason If you can, grab the whole machine, there are a lot of good parts like belt idlers and such. I have several of them, as they are quite plentiful around here

The idea of and old combine hopper would be a good one. How are you planning on powering everything on it?
There are lots of old JD combines around these parts. Lots of 95 and 105 combine can be found by taking a short drive around the country side

 

Yes, that is basically it, except to have the auger reach out further like AlbertaBuck said. It would be preferable to have a trailer with the auger being powered by the tractor hydraulic hookups. However, a small motor would let the feed cart be able to be used both by a tractor and a truck. Any ideas. Thanks guys.

 

What about a smaller sized unit that could be pulled behind a four-wheeler? Something that would be maneuverable, and hold a few hundred pounds. Such a small unit could be built fairly easily, and would work for a fair sized operation until I would purchase a tub grinder/mixer. Possibly it could be built with one of those plastic tubs that fit on a pallet that contain liquids? They generally have a metal cage around them.

Anyways, I think I am going to basically have a metal tank with a homemade auger welded into the side at an angle. The auger will come up fairly high off the ground. 6-8 feet? And then have a flexible tube come down to direct the feed.

If I do plastic, then I would like to use one of those liquid tanks that fit on a pallet, usually with a metal cage. And then have a PVC pipe auger off of that. It would be about 8-10 feet long perhaps. Anyways, can the PVC be plastic welded to the material on those tanks. I am not sure what it is called. If not, could a bracket be built for the auger?

 

What you are really looking for is a gravity box with a drill fill attachment. The auger can be swung back against the side of the gravity box when you need to get through a gate or into the shed but swings out with a down spout to direct the grain (feed) into the drill or feed bunk.

 

Yes, I have seen that. That would be what I would eventually get. Right now, I am going to get something smaller for now. Mostly because with my facilities, there is not enough room to maneuver one of those around very well. When I get my new setup, I will have plenty of room.
