Header loss in dry corn

I am having major header loss in dry corn.
Here is my settings.
Ground MPH 2.5
Header rear shaft speed 650 RPM
Deck plates about 1 1/4'' apart, (that is as far shut as they will go)
Do any of these numbers pop out as being wrong.
We are dealing with very small corn kernels this year, that is the main issue.
ANY help would be appreciated.

Is this a hydraulic deck plate header or manual adjust or spring adjust? Need more info. How many rows is header? What combine is it on? What make header? Those type of things. Most corn heads have one deck plate that is stationary that can be manually adjusted and the other deck plate moves hydraulically. Dragos are spring loaded but have a manual adjustment on them. Sounds like you need to close the deck plates more to me.

I run an L2 Gleaner that is older. Both deck plates are manually adjustable and will close more than yours. Have variable speed header drive to slow it down.
Many makes of deck plates have a wear strip/rod at the opening. Is it worn or rounded more than it should be?
Not sure of your problem. Are the cobs butt shelling and loose corn on the plates?
That can be related to settings or sometimes plant genetics.
Or are cobs getting pulled down into the stalk rolls because the whole cob is small?

….and close the deck plates up like rice farmer previously mentioned. I have never seen a situation where wide open would be the correct setting. Also some hybrids experience worst header lost as-well… all things being equal.

We did a study a couple years ago - and the # 1 mechanical reason for header loss seems to be deck plates too far apart. That said, certain varieties are really bad for that.
All above are correct. Close DP as much as possible. Slow header down, drive slower.
There are some really $$$ "solutions" out there, from "Get a Drago" to rubber covers for the gathering chain lugs.....
