Hydraulic breakout tines

Does anyone have much experience with hydraulic adjustable breakout tines? How does the maintenance compare to a spring tine? Do the seals last? I'm looking at a simplicity all rounder 305 bar.

Hi Wac - sorry it took so long to gather a few facts for you. I don't own a machine with hydraulic tynes, but have a few neighbors who do.

One has a shearer trashworker, probably 10 -15 years old when he got it, and he replaced most of the seals in the first couple years he had it, but has had little trouble in the last ten. I have used this machine, and it does a great job in rocks. When the seal fails it will slowly seep for a long time without getting to the stage of pouring oil out.

Compare that to another neighbor who replaced all of the seals on his brand new seedhawk in the first year - half of them during seeding! Not much trouble since getting them all replaced though.

Talked to another yesterday who has a Flexicoil 820 that was bought new without tynes, and fitted simplicity hydraulic tynes instead. That was 11 years ago and they had their first 2 seals need replacing this seeding. They are very happy with the tynes - had a couple on the ends get bent sideways when turning through rocks, but they do have some really solid granite rocks up there. He said they bought a couple new tynes this year as spares and they were about $1200 a piece!

Another neighbor has a Gason, but it's his first year with it, so there's not much to report on the reliablilty front, but he does like it.

Seedhawk was a bad batch of machined ram caps that destroyed the seals when screwed together. Not a fun first season but after all rams were replaced have done 12000ha since and haven't had issues other than one or two hydraulic fittings coming loose.

I still have a few videos of our old spring seeder going through rocky ground gives me nightmares looking at it. It surprising we only used to break a few tines a season really.

Thanks for clearing that up Tony. The memory is a bit hazy sometimes!

With our old spring machine my Dad used to say "You don't hear it from the cab, but when you drive that thing over rocks, it's louder than if you had a dozen guys banging as hard as they can with sledgehammers."
