I am looking at replacing our 750 with an 860 and have some questions. We harvest corn, beans and oats(in Iowa):

- What is the hopper size of the 860(I've heard 200 and 225 or does it depend on the year)?
- How reliable is the V-8 engine(seems like many of the v-8's have been rebuilt)? or does the 6 cylinder have enough power for the 860?

Re: MF 860

in Europe I believe only the V8 was offered due to the large amount of straw that goes through our combines
Many of the dealers would open these V8`s up they were supposed to give about 220 HP when this was done. I never saw one of these combines wreck an engine as long as the radiators were kept clean so they kept cool. They did smoke well though. I remember pumping over a hundred gallons of fuel through a day when we were chopping straw , and this is imperial gallons none of your short American gallons
I am told that this engoien was used in power boat racing opened up to give 450 HP

The V8 with the rotary pump give a lot of problems, but if you have the in line system (normally on all combine) you have no problems. If you give more power to the engine on a 760, you have to put a bit larger air filter.
I know someone who experienced short of power in europa with a V8-540 in a 760 rated at 180 hp, all the time in the red zone of the temp gauje. During winter, he has just put a TV8-640 from a bus, and after removal of the turbo, he said 225-240hp. He keep the same cooling and just put a giant air filter from a Cat dozer or something on the top of the hood, remove the muffler, and never more experienced overheating problems, in 25 years of operation. His machine has just a 6 row and 1050 mm large tires on the front and done a lot of custom work like that, with a rebored hydro motor to keep the machine in 3rd gear in mud, when others combines are in the barn... This V8 combine was just a part of agricultural story. The owner of this custom combine, is just the inventor of the Bima tractor, to said all...
