Simplot 40 Rock (12-40-0) vs MESZ

Our local CPS dealer has just started bringing in a new fertilizer to compete with MESZ. It's called 40 Rock from Simplot, and it's analysis is very similar to MESZ. It's 12-40-0, with 6.5% sulfur, and 1% zinc (compared to MESZ with 10% sulfur and 1% zinc).

We've been pretty happy with MESZ lately, though we have to go a lot farther to get it. If 40 Rock works just as well and is competitive, we certainly will try some.

Anyone had any experience with this 40 rock phosphate fertilizer?

Or any opinions in general about the efficacy of either MESZ or 40 Rock and regular 11-52 MAP?

I haven't got any price quotes yet. I anticipate they will be close to the same price. CPS is bringing in 40 Rock in response to demand for MESZ. They want to compete with Richardson, so they have to be somewhat close.

Last year we never did get pricing from CPS on 40 Rock, so we ended up using all MESZ. This year, P&H has 40 Rock, and it's about the same price as MESZ. So on wheat where going to do some trials MESZ vs 40 Rock vs 11-52. Though I'm not sure how scientific of a trial I can make it, so it may not show us anything.

As to your question, I don't personally know. We've only ever put MESZ in the seed row with wheat, and we typically put down about 40# actual P (100# MESZ product). With Canola, we keep it all in the double shoot side band with the N, mainly because we don't have enough tanks on the air drill to do it separately, say to split the P between seed row and the side band.

$ per # of P, MESZ and 40 Rock are about 1.5 times the cost of 11-52. In our case we can use the zinc and sulfur, which we'd have to add separately for some crops.

Since the thread was revived, I should report the results of our unscientific trial in hard red spring wheat. Did a quarter with 40#P from MESZ, a quarter with 40 Rock, and a quarter with 11-52. All under irrigation. The 11-52 yielded about 83 bu/ac, the MESZ and the 40 Rock fields both yielded about 87 bu/ac. Too many variables to say much with certainty, but it feels like the MESZ and the 40 Rock both gave us response. Planning to use mostly 40 Rock next spring as a P source. This was placed in the seed row, with a total of 70 N in the side band (35# N from ESN), and another 45 # N put on through the water from 28-0-0. Sandy soil with somewhat high pH and lower organic matter.

In dry beans we always use MESZ or 40 Rock, because of the Zinc that's in it (still need to add more zinc, so maybe it doesn't matter).

One thing I do know is that ESN does have a noticeable effect on our yields.
