I have a '78 850 Vers. and the engine (855cummins) is leaking fuel into the base. My question is; is this a big issue to fix? Can we do it in the farm shop,or does it require cummins tech to do this? I haven't touched it yet but I am thinking it will mean pulling injectors and lines to find the source of the leak. I hope we can do it ourselves because I don't want to spend a lot of money on an old tractor TIA Paul

That's right Scott. I'm not sure whay you mean by timing the injectors;I thoght they were driven from the cam. I was hoping we could at least get it disassembled and get new parts ordered, call in the tech for assembly and setup. How are the injectors held in? are they pressed in or clamped in with bolts? Is it necessary to remove the heads to check the fuel bores for leaks? Thanks.

there are o rings on the injector tubes that get brittel after time and can cause fuel to leak by into engine. it is not a big deal to pull injectors and put them back in then you just have to set your rack after if you have done other engines before not a big deal. a 855 is a simple motor to work on worst case you could do most of the work as far as pulling injectors putting them back in and then have cummins come out and run the top end. good luck any other questions let me know i would be happy to help as much as i can have a good day

yes they are driven by push rods, two bolts hold each one in, been careful, don't drop a bolt, been there, gonna need a puller to pull them, ahead of injection pump, there is a data plate that runs verticale, look at it and tell me what injector setting is, zero lash, 0r x amount of travel example, .0228 travel, give me this info, any questions email me with a contact # snelsen@gondtc.com, scott.

where are you located, got tools and manuals, git me info, if you feel comfortable doing this, don't have a issue with this, can you get a cummins tech out, after hours, or weekend, i would recommend this pay a little more, i have done it so many times, BUT, if you have never done it, can be confusing, get me data, send me email at snelsen@gondtc.com with a contact #, scott.

we alays used a lady slipper to pull them out after we undid the hold down but i guess there is a special tool. but a lady slipper will work done it quite a few times i think you should be able to go on the internet and get specs on running the rack also. good luck hope you get it going without to much expense

From Ontario ,Scott . Have the basic tools, can get specialty stuff from dealer where I work partime, also have a spec book for engine I think it has the specs for setting injectors. Will send an e-mail when I get this apart. 8010;what is a lady slipper? never heard of it. When you say the rack I assume you mean that rocker assy that fires the injectors. Also noticed I have a leak on the throttle shaft on fuel pump;I think I will send it out to the diesel shop. Can the techs at the diesel shop set that pump to deliver a bit more power?

the lady slipper question has already been answered thanks Quappelle. yes you can have them turn the pump up but some things to think about are if you turn it up and your motor is getting weak you could do some damage. if you have not done any injector or pump work in a while i would suggest have them check out your pump get it back to spec and get injectors all checked put it back together run your top end and you might be suprised at how much more power you have. when they are checking out your pump have them turn it up to the top end of the specs and you should be good if you have not had any type of this work done on it in a while. not trying to sound like a professional but we have done lots of work on these motors over the years good luck getting it going hope it all works out have a good winter

scott: in your area will your cummins dealer put used injectors on there test stand and check them out for you. our local cummins shop tells us they dont want to contaminate there system with dirty injectors and all they will do is sell us recons. this kind of blows my mind as why do they have the equipment if they wont use it. so we always go to a independent shop and get most of our work done. just curious if it is like this all over or just our local cummins dealer anymore they seem like all they want to do is sell you recon parts and wont even put a pump on there stand. like i said just wondered if shop in your area are like this too. thanks 8010

Can't believe its been 3 weeks since we put this in the shop, anyway just got the pump and injectors back from diesel service and I will start reassembly tomorrow. From what the dealer told me the injectors are just exchanged with cummins for recons, but the PT pump was o'hauled in house. Question for Scott; what torque do you apply to the rocker trains that bolt to the head? and do you use a dial indicator to measure the injector travel ? The tag on the pump says .170 for injector travel does that sound right ? Do you use gaset glue on the gaskets between the rocker train & head or the cork gaskets for the cover ? Thanks Paul

Paul, your just talking about top covers correct, I just tighten evenly, no glue, .170 injector travel, this is what verticl tag says forward of diesel pump correct. What data says is correct for you engine, will need to use dial indicator, before setting injectors stroke them to full travel before adjusting, Scott.

Scott; just to update you on this,w got it back together yesterday and it runs great. I was wondering about the knurled screw going into the side of the pump,we couldn't get revs out of the engine but turning that screw ccw about 5 degrees brght it right to 2150, I can't see any way of locking that screw to keep it there. Anyways thanks for the help and Happy holidays. Paul
