Ok i was servicing a tr 97, this unit had the motor changed 2years ago probably put on 600 hrs on it. All i did to this engine was changed the oil pan gasket and the engine breather filter, put 21 L of fresh oil in and a new filter. Had this unit outside running at full throttle (2400 rpm)to chech for leaks. I had it running for about 20min and then it started to bang really load, excessive amounts of smoke coming out engine breather hose, lots of black exhaust. I shut the unit down and now it won't even turn over. Asked another tech what mit have happened and he mentioned that it could have dropped a valve. So my Question is this Why would this happen now? Any idea on what the cause would be?

Don't think dropping a valve would make it not crank. Sounds more like the oil pressure dropped off and it seized up. The popping noise was probably your bearings breaking loose and spinning. And then it seized up. pull your valve cover and check your push rods and valve. If you dropped a valve your push rods would be bent and or springs would be out of place.

Did you use the proper viscosity? If you are certain of this take an oil analysis and find out what was wrong with

Dropping a valve is notorious on CAT 3208, The valve keepers have a tendency to let go.
Valve drops into combustion chamber where it is repetedly smashed back into the head and through the dome of the piston. Not sure why this happens but all diesel engines should be warmed up at low idle for 10 min. Lots of engines don't see proper head lubrication for the first 8 mins.Piston and cylinder walls need to expand to there proper size and clearance before being worked at all.

I'm not real mechanic like lots of you guys. However I have to disagree. A normal operating diesel engine should run just fine for 20 min at full throttle just sitting there doing nothing. For a motor to totally seize up, there is a major failure of some part. Oil pump or blockage in new oil filter etc.

The fact you had the pan off has my attention. One probable cause of what you describe is it lost oil pressure. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen it happen due to the suction pickup breaking or falling off...and therein lies my suspicion...you just had the pan off:eek: Even something as simple as forgetting a rag or something when you put it back together could cause this...but all any of us here is doing is speculating.

$hit happens, don't take it personally if you are at fault, but the first thing I'd be doing is pulling the pan;)

DCR...stick to bashing women and your conspiracy theories, you're about as competent mechanic as you are a gentleman:rolleyes:

I am no mechanic ether so my engine work has been limited but my very first thought was a sudden loss of oil pressure assuming it did have pressure initially and Albertabuck spelled out my thoughts and then some on why the loss of oil pressure. I would visualize bearings just taking a beating and the pistons scoring up the cylinders and causing so much friction that the engine is loaded down and being given full fuel as its slowing down as its seizing and belching out black smoke. The banging may be a connecting rod that failed. On the other hand was the coolant drained for any reason and was overlooked in being refilled ?. That it won't turn over sounds like something mechanical has locked up the engine at the very least.

Revving out a cold engine would not be a good idea at all, score up cylinder walls and so forth ( have heard of that happening ) but I am not sure why a governed engine run at full throttle with no load is hard on it, if that were the case every one of us would have engines blowing up right left and center. That would be like saying a diesel generator with no load run at full throttle waiting for a load to be applied is liable to blow up .... . Any time a mechanic is out here going over a combine, swather or what have you, they rev it out once its warmed up some and run the internals to check for any unusual noises and so on.

interesting, that really sucks but still interestng. did you fingure out what happened yet?

on a different note ,have a neighbor with a tr97, not sure how many hrs on it. The oil pan gasket has always leaked and they went to change it this past winter. they pulled the pan off to find a bearing sitting in the bottom. never had any problems with the motor before and no noises ever as far as i know. needless to say, they pulled the engine to get it fixed
