Wrapping up the 2024 harvest with an HD50F. Very good in off ground cutting in wheat, good in canola except I didn’t have the side cutter option, and flexes and follows the ground well in pulses and beans.
I believe this header has one major flaw in the cutter bar area. I’ve replaced over 70 gaurds, both cutter bars when they broke, broke all the cutter bar flex metal on the hinges twice, broke both sickles twice, and a few hundred sections. The second gaurd from the head breaks daily as do the gaurds at the hinge point. As it flexes or hinges, the sickle cuts the top of the gaurds off.
Unlike a MacDon, the hinge has three thin pieces of flat iron for the cutter bar with 2 gaurds mounted on it. As it hinges, these pieces bend and eventually break. When running, the gaurds are very misaligned at the hinge.
At the head, sections break daily and will destroy the gaurds as there are no hold downs at the head.
Also had the hydraulic drive motor mount for the reel break, replaced maybe a dozen teeth in the feed drum, replaced all of the plastic skids once, and broke the u joints on the center Draper drive shaft.
Good header overall except for the cutter bar. A definite step down for John Deere. Anyone else having cutter bar issues?

There must be something wrong with that header. Have run one for 2 seasons now and probably replaced 10 guards and used a box of knife sections. Most of them were when combining peas. Same thing with the auger fingers. That’s on 10,000 acres. That being said it will get new knives and guards for next year

Sorry to confuse, the title of the thread should say HD50F Review

I know of several other owners experiencing similar issues. Most will be switching to something else for next year. The RDF40 and 740FD were great headers for me but John Deere took 2 steps forward and 10 steps back on this HD50F. I would love to experiment with modifications, but then I remembered what I paid for this header and think the manufacturer owes it to me to develop solutions.

Your dealer needs to talk to Mother Deere Wheaty1 and get you another cutterbar
There’s definitely something not right with that one.
