So i posted a while back about this project. We were looking at buffing it ourselves but just realized we don't have the time or facilities to do it on our farm not mentioning we dont have a buffer, pads, compound etc currently. So we will have to probably take it in somewhere to get it done. That being said if its going in is it worth trying to fix this paint or would it be better getting it completely redone with new MF paint being to older machines have alot of paint issues and fading/oxidization as opposed to newer machines. We may be able to ask my uncle see if he has buffing stuff just to try a spot on the machine.

I don't know what paint they used on the swathers but it is horrid.
I would look around and see if you can find some of the polyurethane paint that was used to paint the late 860s and the first 8560 combines that was way better quality stuff.
the paint on the 9800 series is even way better may be best to use that stuff. I think it’s a tiny bit brighter red then the original for ours not sure though. I know that Massey Ferguson made a red 9635 and there was an agco and Heston one that was the more burnt orange. They both had terrible paint

I'm not personally a fan of buffing to restore paint. It works kind of, and it beats re-painting, but it's not a permanent solution in my opinion, and requires constant maintenance to ensure the protective coat is maintained. All buffing does is thin the paint layer, removing the oxidation layer. What's left is thinner, and itself will oxidize rather quickly unless protected with a clear coat of some kind. I think last time you spoke of this, someone mentioned that paint from this era was really bad anyway, as far as oxidation was concerned.

Buff it , when your retired and dangling your feet in the water at your choice of retreat you won’t care what the paint looked like on that swather!! Yeah if it’s a classic car ……. Repaint it than!

We want to do it since it’s a pretty decent eye sore and want to upgrade in a few years so will up the value

Or just leave it just like the rest of them lol. Paint on that doesn't affect the swathers reliability or operation. It does what you want, just leave it and buff it when you decide to get rid of it. It's just a tool. Some like theirs shiny and I get it but Massey has the worst paint ever so I just live with it lol.
